How to Charge a Magnet?

Magnets are objects that produce a magnetic field of varying degrees of strength, attracting or repelling metal objects and other magnets. Over time, a magnet may begin to lose its magnetic strength. Learn how to charge a magnet to restore its magnetic field.

1 Obtain an electromagnetic charger. Such a charger is made up of an iron base and metal coils that produce an electrically induced magnetic field capable of transferring magnetic energy to inert magnets. Pre-built electromagnetic chargers, as well as kits to assemble your own magnet charger, can be purchased at many hobby and craft supply stores.

2 Wrap strips of paper around the coils of the electromagnetic charger and connect the wire between the coils to begin inducing a magnetic field.

3 Place the magnet you wish to charge on top of the electromagnetic charger's coils. Check that the poles of the magnet are oriented in an opposite direction from the poles of the charger; the south pole of the magnet should be placed over the north pole of the charger.

4 Leave the magnet on the charger for 60 seconds. During this time, open and close the switch contact between the charger's coils four times for a length of 4 seconds each.

5 Remove the magnet immediately and disconnect the switch between the charger's coils. Resume using the magnet and recharge whenever you notice the magnet's strength is waning.
