According to "Nihon Keizai Shimbun" reported on November 14, Japan's Toshiba recently announced the development of a "samarium-cobalt magnet" for engines that do not use rare earth elements. Most of the rare earths are found in China. Toshiba has established a manufacturing method that allows new magnets to emit magnetic force beyond the current mainstream "neodymium magnet" at 180 degrees Celsius. The demand for magnets for pure electric vehicles, industrial engines and wind turbines is currently expanding. Toshiba is seeking to replace ¡°neodymium magnets¡± with ¡°samarium cobalt magnets¡±.

Although strontium is also a rare earth element, it is abundant in Australia and the United States, so it can be steadily procured.
Although Toshiba developed a strong magnetic samarium-cobalt magnet in 2012, once the temperature exceeds 140 degrees, the magnetic force drops, so it is not used.
Since then, Toshiba has improved the heat resistance of the magnet by performing an independent heat treatment. It is ensured that the "samarium-cobalt magnet" can exert a magnetic force exceeding the "neodymium magnet" within the operating temperature range of the engine. Toshiba hopes to achieve mass production as soon as possible after the sample supply phase.
The "neodymium magnet" currently used needs to add bismuth to the rare earth element bismuth, but the strontium deposit is abundant in China. At the time of the tension between China and Japan in 2010-2011, due to China¡¯s restrictions on exports, prices have skyrocketed and supply risks have surfaced. Previously, samarium-cobalt magnets were used as an alternative to neodymium magnets, but there was a problem that the magnetic force was lower than that of neodymium magnets.
